The New Zealand Parliament has decided to adopt and implement a bill against overly complex language and phrases in order to ease bureaucracy in the government sector. In other words, it is necessary to talk to the population more simply.
The so-called simple language law was introduced by government representative Rachel Boyak, A . reports guardian. He justified his necessity by saying: “New Zealanders have the right to understand what the government requires of them, what their rights are, and what they can hold the government to account for.”
According to the law, government bodies and officials should avoid using complex expressions. Supporters of the law say it will make the country’s democracy more inclusive of people with disabilities, those with low levels of education, and those whose first language is not English.
On the other hand, members of the right-wing opposition oppose the law. They called this provision “policing,” and said it was only intended to intimidate public officials. In the end, the Labor Party, the Green Party and the Maori Indigenous Party voted in favor of the clause, which they also hope will save money on government communications.
