OnePlus has promised extended software support for its mobile phones similar to Samsung

OnePlus has made a serious promise regarding software support for its devices. The manufacturer has committed to providing the current Android OS for four years from now, and for 5 years the security updates needed for some of its devices released next year. OnePlus confirmed its new commitment at a roundtable discussion in London, but has yet to reveal which models will be subject to the new update policy.

It is very likely that extended software support will mainly apply to OnePlus flagship phones that will be released next year, not to mid-range models, nor to previous high-end phones, but we don’t know for sure yet.

Gary Chan, director of product development for operating systems at OnePlus and Oppo, has only revealed so far that security updates will be released every two months. The manufacturer is currently promising three operating systems and four years of security patching for its flagships, and this business policy applies to all numbered models from OnePlus 8 to current devices.

In the case of older mobile phones, such as the OnePlus 7 and Nord mid-range devices, full Android versions are supported for two years, and security patches are released for three years.

Currently, besides Google, Samsung is the other company that has been providing the latest green robot ecosystem for up to four years, but with them this is no longer limited to top models. We hope other manufacturers will notice and soon follow Samsung’s example.
