In October 2022, temperatures were measured above the 1991-2020 average in most of Europe, and the October heat set a record in many countries. But milder-than-normal autumn weather was not only characteristic of Europe, above-average values were also measured in Canada, Greenland, Siberia and Africa, among other countries. In local terms, the last month is the eighth most dry and the ninth hottest since 1901.
October 2022 was globally 0.41°C warmer than the average between 1991 and 2020 CopernicusEuropean Union Earth Observation Programme. This value is only 0.04°C lower than the warmest month October recorded worldwide in 2019.
Based on Copernicus’ observations, deviations in European average temperatures are generally larger and more varied than global anomalies. This October was the warmest month in Europe.
In Western Europe, the autumn period set daily records: October set national records in Austria, Switzerland and France, as well as in large parts of Italy and Spain. Based on their measurements, only Iceland and Turkey had temperatures slightly below average within the continent.
Among other parts of the world, it was record warm in Canada, and warmer-than-average weather conditions prevailed in Greenland and Siberia. Temperatures in British Columbia, Canada were about 3°C warmer than average. Above average temperatures were also typical for the Middle East, Iran, and the southern half of Africa.
Exceptionally warm and colder than average scattered areas are found in Antarctica, as well as in parts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Meanwhile, lower-than-average temperatures have been recorded in Australia (especially in the west), the southeastern United States, parts of Mexico, South America, North Africa, parts of Asia, far eastern Russia, and parts of western Antarctica.
Air temperatures mixed near the surface over the major ocean basins. Most of the Atlantic, Arctic Ocean, Northwest Pacific, and South Pacific, from northern Australia to southern South America, experienced above-average temperatures.
Sea air temperatures were below average in the subtropical eastern and southern tropics of the Pacific Ocean, indicating the persistence of La Niña, according to Copernicus, and in the area off the coast of West Antarctica. Temperature conditions varied in the Indian Ocean region.
Hungary: A warm dry October
National Weather Service (OMSZ) according to its meaning A rainy September was followed by a very dry October in Hungary, the national average precipitation was only 9.5 mm, which is less than 20% of the 1991-2020 average.
This made October the eighth dry month in our country since 1901.
But last month was not only dry, it was exceptionally warm here as well: the weather was 1.7°C warmer than average – with a national average temperature of 12.4°C – so the OMSZ called this the ninth of October The warmest.
Few stations in the country reached 20 mm of monthly precipitation, at the same time, this value remained less than 5 mm in the greater area of Northern Transdanubia and the Great Plain.

Compared to the average years 1991-2020, it can be seen that so far this year, only April experienced more than average rainfall, while all other months were marked by little rain or dry weather. It wasn’t much better last year either, but until August there were two months with above-average rain and four months with slightly below-average rain.
In the Hármas-Körös region, this October was the driest of the 20th century. Since the beginning of the 20th century: here, at several stations, the total precipitation did not even reach 1 mm.
The Alfold region remains the driest region in Hungary, with the total amount of rain for 2022 so far still less than 250 mm in the central part.
