The economic problems caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union forced many Russians to search for new ways of making money. Putin recounted in the documentary that he earned a side income by taxi. Riding in taxis was a rarity in Russia at the time, as many also used their work vehicles for commuting, such as ambulances.

Putin’s comments fueled speculation about his intentions with Ukraine, the former Soviet republic.
