Also on Thursday, December 9, the Mexican government formally announced that it will sign the Artemis Agreement, which outlines best practices in US-led space research.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon has announced that Mexico will be the 14th country to sign the Artemis Accords, a document that addresses various issues related to safe and sustainable space exploration. Many of them are directly related to the Outer Space Treaty and other international agreements.
Ebrard said in a statement that Mexico Pleased to participate in NASA’s Artemis Moon Exploration ProgramBut he did not provide details of what he believed his country would play in this effort. NASA announced the Artemis Agreement in October 2020, which was initially signed by eight signatories. Five more joined before Mexico, the last of them on October 26 in Poland.
As emphasized at our inaugural meeting of the National Space Council, the Artemis Accords set clear standards for civilian space exploration. We welcome Mexico’s decision to join the Artemis Accords and conduct space exploration in a responsible and sustainable manner.
