Artificial intelligence has become Meta’s main investment area.
The past year and a half at Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has been so turbulent that, according to insiders, Mark Zuckerberg has been immersed in a social media virtual reality dream. Despite billions of dollars invested every quarter, the space called the metaverse is still in its infancy, and right now, the general public just doesn’t seem to get excited about it.
With the latest layoffs announced this week, Mark Zuckerberg, who has already laid off 21,000 people, seems to be slowly waking up. The owner of Facebook has been conspicuously silent for months about his metaverse, which he had previously seized on every opportunity, and now in a letter he sent to Meta employees regarding layoffs, he has announced that artificial intelligence will be his new area of focus from now on, and that he will get even bigger Some amount of investment within the company.
This does not mean that Zuckerberg has abandoned his plans for Metaverse, according to the letter, related developments will continue to play a central role in determining social media in the future.
It is not yet clear what the focus of artificial intelligence means for Facebook and Instagram, and what specific functions users can expect, Zuckerberg gave examples of developments related to content discovery.
There’s a good chance that what the new direction means is also a mystery to Meta employees.
