The popular PlayStation 4 exclusive is shutting down its servers for good, but fans can continue playing offline.
Playstation 4 Exclusive Gran Turismo Sport game It has shut down its servers forever. Online jobs will no longer be available from February 1st. The game was the only part of the long-running racing simulation series that was exclusive to the PS4.
The GTS was originally released in October 2017 to mixed reviews, but is now considered one of the classics of the Gran Turismo series.
The original lukewarm reception was largely rooted in Gran Turismo Sport's focus on online play. Hence, this was a major departure from its predecessors. But according to official Sony data, the game still managed to sell nearly 13 million copies in the first three years.
Three more years later, on January 31, Polyphony Digital officially ended all multiplayer services for GTS. This turn is long overdue. After all, the Japanese developer has already announced that it will shut down Gran Turismo Sport's servers in September 2023. Since then, the studio has also removed all of the game's downloadable content from the PlayStation Store on December 1st. Garage Car Emblems, Online Trophies, Mileage Store closures, and online features such as Seasonal Events and the Open Lobby are now permanently unavailable to Gran Turismo Sport players.
Gran Turismo Sport content is no longer available on PlayStation 4:
- Garage car logos
- Miles store
- Awards with online requirements
- Online services
Polyphony Digital recently released an update that made other aspects of the game available offline. This includes career mode progression and player garage content. Both will continue to be tracked via offline PS4 save data.
As with all other console games, save data in Gran Turismo Sport can be saved online using the Backup and Restore option within System Preferences.
The only condition is that current access is primarily an opportunity for those who have already purchased the game. Gran Turismo Sport was removed from the PS Store without warning in January. A physical copy of the game can still be found. But these examples are likely to become rarer and more expensive as the years go by. However, you can now still find brand new Gran Turismo Sport copies on Amazon for just $30. (For approximately 10,500 Hungarian forints.)
Polyphony Digital's 2017 title is the second PS4 game to suffer a server outage in recent weeks. End of Life comes shortly after San Diego Studio and Valkyrie Entertainment discontinued their asynchronous multiplayer game Guns Up. From now on, fans of the series looking for a modern racing simulation can only look to Gran Turismo 7 on PS4 and PS5.
