Index - Culture - If it was on Netflix, everyone would be watching this series now

There’s a simple reason for that: the Apple TV+ streaming service, which hosts the production, never really became popular in Hungary. Our hearts bleed, because we’re sure that if The Mosquito Coast aired on Netflix, everyone would be addicted to it, and hundreds of comments on social media would glorify the production, which is back for its second season on November 4.

But what is this? At the center of the story is a self-styled inventor named Ally Fox (Justin Theroux), who forces her family to live in fairly simple conditions: she doesn’t let her kids go to school or get a phone, or talk to their kids. grandparents. The reason for the strange lifestyle is that Ally and his wife Margot (Melissa George) are hiding from the authorities. What exactly the pair did is not revealed during the seven-part first season, only that NSA agents find them, so the Fox family has to flee. Through trenches and bushes, they also touch Mexico, where they make more enemies. Thus, by the end of the season, the mafia is already on its way.

The strongest bond in the series is the main character, Justin Theroux, who brilliantly played a close man from Allie’s hometown in HBO’s The Leftovers, who also experienced severe torment. Every twitch in Theroux is worth its weight in gold, and few others can play the role of a secret inventor like this. For the actor, A Mosquito Coast is actually a family project, as the 1981 novel it’s based on was written by Justin Theroux’s uncle, Paul Theroux. In 1986, it was already made with Harrison Ford in the main role movie versionbut it is likely that few people in this country know it as such, the modern version that has significantly reworked the original story.

The script sometimes falters, but the actors and beautiful cinematography make up for it: In front of the alpha male in Theroux, Melissa George, who plays the wife, wears gloves beautifully, and her character, Margot, steps forward more and more from the shadows. She leads her family. Likewise, the children of Ally and Margot experience a remarkable character development, Charlie (Gabriel Bateman), who was initially very innocent, going so far as to kill a bad-blooded boy in a few episodes, while Dina (Logan Polish) begins to show her more and more practical and creative side. while escaping.

Mosquito Coast is a bit like Breaking Bad, only here the horse does not take off with one person, but with the whole family. So the basic concept is really interesting.

The Apple TV+ series, as we wrote above, is back with its second season on November 4. The only reason we didn’t write about it earlier is because the season opener became so filler that we’ve been scratching our heads on it for days. After more than a year of waiting, the creators managed to get this flashback ring right under our noses. Which at least could be called a daring move, but we can also say it’s pure madness. Because we were thirsty precisely for what would happen to the foxes in the depths of the Guatemalan jungle …

In addition, we learned a lot about Fox’s parents and the reasons for hiding and running away in the premiere. But an episode with a lot of padding should have been released sometime in the middle of season one, not now.

The second part of season two was already a better move, also because Allie’s story nowadays has finally progressed. What was running, was running, as the life of the main character was in danger from moment to moment, the ship in which the foxes were traveling caught fire, and even the hungry crocodile made the progress of our favorites difficult.

In terms of exotic locations and cultures, Mosquito Coast has never been weak, and no other series puts its heroes in such dire conditions.

And believe me, there is something refreshing about the fact that Walter White, voluntarily defying the law, deliberately mingles with the legendary worker McGyver, as a result of which we get a madman like Allie. We just stare at the screen, but every time we sit in front of The Mosquito Coast — a new episode comes out every week, Fridays — our adrenaline rises a bit as we remember: More and more neck-breathing bastards from the Fox family.

And what’s the most beautiful thing ever? The protagonists of the mosquito family are also pretty badass, so sometimes we have no idea who we’re rooting for.

In terms of scoring, we’re having a hard time, because if we look at the whole first season, it’s easy to be somewhere in 9/10 moving around. The beginning of the second phase retroactively, max 6/10while the last episode released at the time of writing is already up to 7.5 / 10. We’re worried about continuing, so that this undulating trend doesn’t continue, because then we’ll have to say in our review of the entire season that Apple has canceled our favorite. Of course, no one can take away from us the wonderful first season, thank God.
