The strength of Ursula von der Leyen's second term in office could be influenced mainly by three factors: her legitimacy, inter-institutional relations, and the support of member states, the National University of Public Service wrote. (Niki) Blog Tibor Navracsics in his published article.
According to the minister, the political background of Ursula von der Leyen's party has also been weakened by the fact that her party, the Christian Democratic Union, lost the upcoming German elections and went into opposition.
As he wrote, the Brussels politician “ran for the European Parliament as leader of the European People’s Party list, but the support of the leaders of the member states is much weaker. In Germany he is considered an opposition politician, so he is not the favorite, but rather a forced choice for the government coalition. The French president openly welcomed von der Leyen’s re-nomination with reservations. This does not bode well for the next five years.”
Overall, based on our forecasts, Ursula von der Leyen will be in a weaker position in the next five years than she was in the previous period. The internal political problems of the member states and the weaknesses of the EU institutions make it more difficult for her to create a supportive political environment and assume the leadership role of the European Commission.
