The Democratic-majority US House of Representatives voted to form a special committee to investigate the Capitol siege Jan. 6 after Senate Republicans blocked a bill in May creating a Democratic but bipartisan commission on the same issue. MTI reported.
The committee has the right to summon
Donald Trump
“She is presumed to be a witness,” said Carrie Cordero, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, adding that the issue was whether committee members would want to file a lawsuit to subpoena the subpoena.
Republicans say the committee can’t be impartial, it will serve Democrats purposes, and is unnecessary anyway because the issue is already under investigation by the standing committees and the prosecution.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the formation of the Special Committee.
Violent groups of Trump supporters rushed to the Capitol Police on January 6, even during the former president’s period of checking the results of the presidential election, storming the building and “stalking” members of Congress to prevent the approval of Joe Biden’s victory.
