Index – Abroad – America seeks to protect endangered porpoises, and Mexico is not responding

The US Bureau of Trade has protested in recent days with a competent Mexican governmental organization about the issue of the endangered California porpoise being not protected.

In 2020, a stronger treaty between America, Mexico and Canada will go into effect, with much stronger clauses than previous environmental regulations. This is the first complaint between states since the agreement.

If the dispute is not resolved, the United States may impose trade sanctions.

Since 2021, the Mexican government has banned fishing in the Gulf of California, which houses nearly a dozen California porpoises. In contrast, a few months later, Mexico changed its stance by allowing 60 ships to fish in the Gulf of California.

The number of dolphins in California has decreased dramatically due to being caught in illegal fishing nets. These nets are also used to catch endangered fish, tuaba, whose floating bladders are considered a special delicacy and used as medicine in China.

The Mexican government has yet to make any announcements about the endangered dolphin species.
