I’ve faced the financials of the Poles and learned that they are not going to cut into the new AAA development this year.
a CD project Financial results for the first quarter of the current year (January – March) Here Profit is down 65% from the previous year because The Witcher 3 (now on PlayStation Now was Cyberpunk 2077 Sales have also slowed, the latter performing rather poorly at the time of its release. That’s why Sony kicked it off the PlayStation Store.
Interestingly enough, we’ve learned that there’s some data we need to get back in. The Poles said they couldn’t go into details of the metrics or comment on how the dialogue was progressing, and Sony asked them to do so. There is a process by which they can return to the Sony Digital Store and negotiations are underway, but the decision will be announced when everything is ready for that. So it will probably be the same as before (because they previously said it was Sony’s decision).
The image below shows how many times Cyberpunk 2077 has been out since its release and how much the CD RED project has improved since those major overhauls. While we don’t understand how this is tracked (we still understand on console…but on PC?), they certainly still have…and speaking of this game, they said before that they’re starting to tackle the idea of AAA development parallel. Well, that (at least for this year) has been taken off the table.
The Poles said they plan for AAA promotions from 2022 and until then, 2021 will be a year of change because they still have a lot to do with Cyberpunk 2077, with a large part of the team working. However, there are already smaller groups that have started unannounced future projects. About a third of the Cyberpunk team is working on something unknown, but that doesn’t mean parallel development to AAA, with roughly half of the group still looking after the game that launched in December (they haven’t come out yet with their next-gen update, detto The Witcher 3 -at!) .
So this year, they’re mostly doing what they should have done so far. If Cyberpunk 2077 could appear at the end of 2021, the CD project would surely paint a very different picture of itself…
