Hungary supports Georgia’s accession to the European Union

The Head of the Ministry stated that Hungary is interested in Georgia becoming a member state of the European Union, and will support the European Union in granting the country candidate status as soon as possible.

The minister stated that “Hungary is interested in meeting East and West,” adding: “Hungary wants to be a place that represents a meeting point.” According to his words, development is guaranteed if “we do not isolate ourselves from each other, but bring our partners closer together”; Hungary is an excellent place for this.

Bence Tozun said that in the integration process, Hungary has accumulated a lot of experience in the past period, which was shared with the Georgian minister in the current meeting. He added that they also discussed the legal competitiveness of the two countries, as well as the possibilities for further developing legal cooperation, noting that it is also important for business partnerships and investments to “get to know each other’s legal system.”

The minister pointed out that last October, a joint meeting of the Hungarian-Georgian government was held in Georgia, where a declaration of intent and an action plan for cooperation between the two countries was signed. He pointed out that today’s meeting is also the result of this joint work. “They do not stop there,” he continued, “they also want to hold joint legal forums through which businessmen, lawyers and legal solutions can be presented.” Bence Tuzun said that the first meeting of its kind will be held next April in Georgia, adding that he is confident that cooperation will contribute to strengthening the economy of the two countries and further strengthening the friendship between the two peoples.

The Minister of Justice touched on the fact that Georgia and Hungary think alike about global issues, and that the governments of both countries consider family and strengthening family support systems to be extremely important. He added that both countries have a government based on Christian principles and carrying Christian values.

Rati Brigadze thanked Hungary for its support in the issue of joining the European Union, as well as Hungary’s continued support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial independence. “For us, Euro-Atlantic integration is very important, and the Georgian people also chose it and voted for it,” he stressed.

The Georgian Minister of Justice said that the European Commission recommends granting Georgia candidate status. He added: “Legal harmonization is underway, and it is not an easy matter, but I am sure that with your help and the help of others, we can meet the challenge.” He also announced that the first Hungarian-Georgian Legal Forum will be held from April 20 to 24, 2024. He noted that within this framework the most important legal issues will be reviewed. Rati Brigadze stressed that today’s meeting is “clear evidence that we can learn from each other.” In his words, they discussed, among other things, the renewal of the land registration system, which is also very important for Georgia.
