Cloud Hunting on Mars National Geographic

The height of the Martian atmosphere at an altitude of 50-80 kilometers is the subject of research. Although Martian clouds consist of ice water (similar to Earth’s ice), they sometimes form cold enough to form icy clouds (carbon dioxide). However, the question is what gives rise to clouds, especially water ice, and in what seasons; It could reveal how water entered the Martian atmosphere and how high it was.

The mission of the civilian researchers is to search for arcs of the presence of clouds in infrared range data collected over 16 years by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). Having identified the arcs, professionals will then learn about seasonal trends, where they will form in the atmosphere, how temperature conditions will change along with clouds, and they will extract a host of other information as well.

The pattern in the photo is similar to what the entrepreneurs can look at in the project. The arc objects in the center of the image should be searched for in satellite images.

Armin Kleinbühl, Vice President of the MRO Climate Test Team, said:

Scientists are also trying to develop an algorithm that recognizes arcs, but this task is much simpler for a human being. Kleinbeuil added that the results of the identification mission being performed now can be used later to teach algorithms, which would multiply the benefits for civilian researchers.

In connection with the project, experts will speak occasionally and explain the purpose of using the information and data collected by civilian researchers.

Mars may have once had an atmosphere much denser than it does now (currently only 1% of Earth’s), and the waters of rivers and lakes gleamed on its surface. Atmospheric volatility also means that the water at the surface has disappeared, and due to the lower pressure, this would still be the case if there was surface water. There are many different theories about what happened, and why Mars turned so radical. This means that anyone involved in civilian research can contribute to solving the problem of the disappearance of water and the atmosphere of Mars.
