Blinken: Washington is not asking anyone to choose between America and China

The first ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to work in Israel

Blinken, who attended a meeting of the Seven Great Industrial Powers (G7) in London Wednesday night, told BBC Radio 4’s public service channel Thursday morning that the construction of the North Stream 2 pipeline, a Russian-German investment, is in Russia. The interests of Europe are incompatible with the interests of the United States.

According to the US Secretary of State, the pipeline system under the Baltic Sea is also inconsistent with the European Union’s energy security principles, as the European Union seeks to ensure that Poland, Ukraine and many other important European countries do not rely heavily on one country for energy supply.

Speaking about the relationship between the United States and Russia, Anthony Blinken said in an interview with the BBC that when Moscow behaves recklessly or aggressively, as it has done with cyberattacks or interference in the US election process or the case of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, Washington will not leave a response without .

At the same time, the US Secretary of State said that the US government is interested in making Russian-American relations more stable and predictable, and if Moscow chooses this path, there are areas in which the United States and Russia can work together to achieve their common interests. .

Blinken emphasized the same thing at the G7 meeting.

At a press conference that opened the ministerial meeting in London on Sunday, he said that Washington, while responding to any reckless or aggressive Russian move, would not seek to increase tensions with Russia, but instead worsened relations with Russia to be more stable and predictable. .

“If Russia takes steps in this direction, we will do the same,” Blinken said at a press conference in advance of the G7 meeting in London.

In an interview with the BBC on Thursday about the US relationship with China, Anthony Blinken said the United States was not seeking to “pressure or restrain” China.

The US Secretary of State said that Washington recognizes that there are countries that have an interest in relations with China, and that the US government will not inform those countries to choose between America or China.

According to Blinken, the United States government prefers to preserve certain principles, most notably a rules-based international order, as the United States, the United Kingdom, and many other countries have invested a great deal of work building this system over the past. Several generations.

The US Secretary of State said, if someone tries to undermine this system, for example, by not abiding by the rules of the game or the commitments they make, “we are on our heels and realize that this is unacceptable.”

According to Blinken, this in and of itself is not only related to China, and the purpose of this position is to maintain a rules-based international order, because that is the best guarantee of peace and prosperity.

However, he added, each country needs to consider very carefully the nature of China’s investment in its economy, especially Chinese investment in areas of strategic importance.

However, according to Anthony Blinken, the United States is not saying that a trade relationship with China should not be preserved.
