The Social Democrats came first in Sunday's Brandenburg state election, ahead of the right-wing Alternative for Germany party, according to exit polls.

According to the polls conducted by the public television stations ARD and ZDF, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) achieved a result of 31.1-31.3 percent (26.2 percent in 2019). The Alternative for Germany (AfD) came in second place and could win 29.5-29.8 percent of the vote (23.5 percent in 2019). The left-wing Sahra-Wagenknecht alliance, founded at the beginning of the year, won 12.3-12.4 percent, followed by the center-right Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) with 11.9 percent (15.6 percent in 2019).

The Greens, with 4.6% of the vote (10.8% five years ago) and the Left (Die Linke) with 3-3.5% of the vote (10.7% in 2019) also fell below the 5% entry threshold. Like the BVB/Free Voters. According to an ARD poll, the FDP's support is below one percent. However, the latter parties could still enter the regional legislature with mandates obtained in single-member constituencies.

Voter turnout was about 74 percent (61.3 percent in 2019).

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, leader of the Social Democratic Party, expressed satisfaction with the exit polls. The Chancellor said in New York that the “mood is good” in his party. (MTI)
