An 88-year-old woman in Italy accidentally received a water bill worth more than 15,000 euros (about 5.7 million forints) instead of 55 euros, and after hearing the amount, she fell ill and died on Sunday evening, MTI reported.

Caterina Giovinazzo, 88, had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of a hospital in northern Italy for more than a month, when her son-in-law informed her during a visit on Sunday that they had received a water bill worth 15,339 euros. Euros from August to October. In order to settle the debt, the old woman's bank withheld half of the claim on the woman's account, which greatly shook the sick woman.

The water supplier (Irene) later admitted that an error had occurred when reading the meter, which is why they may have misestimated the woman's actual water consumption by a few cubic metres. According to IRIN's new calculations, the woman living in Camporoso should have paid between 55 and 65 euros in water fees during the affected period. While the service provider returned the excess amount to the bereaved family, the woman's relatives are demanding clarification and a full investigation into what happened.
