The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), the animal rescue and welfare charity in England and Wales, receives thousands of calls every year, and if it is indeed the end of the year on a Saturday, it has also collected the most extraordinary number of rescues. Most memorable was when a Hispaniol tree frog traveled 6,400km from the Dominican Republic with a wrapped banana – to Staffordshire, where Ian Holloways unloaded their shopping in the kitchen. They also rescued washed-up seals that wandered far from their natural habitat, and several foxes whose heads were stuck to something – say, a watering can. Among the particular cases mentioned is a distressed hedgehog that fell into a canal in Hull, East Yorkshire, in August. The hedgehog was finally released using barbecuing tongs.
In November, Hasson flew into the Next store in Newcastle, circling the three-storey store for two days. “There is no doubt that it was attracted to the Christmas decorations,” experts said of the animal, which eventually settled on top of a tree.
