3 Scholarships For Study Abroad And Language Learning

Are you planning to study abroad? There are several grants available to help you pay for your international education. Consider the following options:

    • The Boren award for international study, a scholarship of the National Security Education Program, funds up to $20,000 to students studying abroad to learn languages crucial to U.S. national security in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Deadline: Dec. 1, 2017 for study abroad in 2017-2018.

    • The Gilman Scholarship provides up to $5,000 toward study abroad or internship program costs, and some students can add an additional Critical Need Language Award for language study. The Gilman program aims to diversify the students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Students receiving a federal Pell Grant who will be studying abroad or participating in a career-oriented international internship for academic credit are eligible to apply. Deadlines: early March 2018 for Fall 2018 and 2018-2019 study abroad.

    • The Critical Language Scholarship program aims to increase the number and diversity of U.S. students who undertake studies of critical languages including Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Russian, and Turkish. The grant covers airfare, room and board, courses, activities, and a stipend. Its summer programs are the equivalent of one full year of college language study. Deadline: Nov. 15, 2017 for summer 2018 programs.
